Does a university have the right censor students? (Revisited)

The Alliance Defense Fund, the same group defending Jennifer Keeton in her case against Augusta State, was at least partly victorious in efforts to bring about the reinstatement of Professor Kenneth Howell at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Diana Macedo reported for Fox News that,

"The department of Religion will continue Kenneth Howell's adjunct appointment for the fall semester, and has offered him the opportunity to teach Religion 127, Introduction to Catholicism," school spokesman Robin Kaler said in a statement.

Howell had been relieved of his teaching duties following a complaint that his agreement with the position of the Catholic Church on homosexuality was tantamount to hate speech. While Howell's case is still under review, the school, which has admitted no erroneous actions, has offered him at least a temporary position for the fall. In a July 28th letter they said:

"The School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics will be contacting Dr. Howell to offer him the opportunity to teach Religion 127, Introduction to Catholicism, on a visiting instructional appointment at the University of Illinois, for the fall 2010 semester."

While this is not a permanent invitation, it does offer hope that the university will make the decision not to discriminate based on the personal religious beliefs of this professor.
